Cognitive Ability
How does this affect student's behaviors?
Students who have low cognitive abilities may exhibit difficult behaviors. This may be attributed to their limited communication abilities and language deficits. These are the students who have been deemed as having limited intellectual ability and whose cognitive standard scores are below the 70s as measured by cognitive ability assessments and adaptive skills. These students may require assistance with receptive and expressive communication skills. They may not comprehend social cues and draw inferences in order to communicate with others and may effect the student’s social relationships with their peers and their educators. If they are not able to communicate effectively, they may become frustrated. They may require more intense interventions, which requires a significant focus on communication skills in order to express themselves more appropriately.
